2016 Developments

Exhibitions, other · October 17, 2016

10th Summer Showcase – HVFAA Annual exhibition 28 Dec 2015 to 3 January 2016 held at Laurieton.

The oil stick painting on paper “Garden Delight” won the Emerging Artist award. This painting commenced as an experiment in the use of the oil stick and resulted in a looser and expressive work. It was a step away from the traditional subjects and methods I had been using, and started an exciting and more vibrant feeling in my work.

The year has been one of more experimentation in my paintings – looser, more vivid.  My current challenge is to paint plein air in oils.  i have just attended a three day workshop with the aim of gaining some experience in the process .

A delighted Maria Nolan accepts the congratulations and her 1st place award from Isobel Hermann who established the Adelaide Swift Memorial Trust in 1999 and who has been actively involved in the bi-annual exhibition since.   Adelaide Swift was a local resident of SW Rocks who loved to paint local scenes and whose wish was to help and encourage rural artists

The Judge was Steve Glesse from Lismore. I submitted two paintings in the Oil/Acrylic section of the exhibition. My oil sticks and oils on paper of the still life “the red teapot” won first prize in this section and was sold during the exhibition to a local buyer.

The judge’s comments were:

“To make inanimate objects come to life is the task of still life painting. This work has a very stable compositional core, a rectangle placed within a circle within a triangular arrangement of other forms. Such stable geometry required to contain the riot of colour in the work. There is a very enjoyable contest going on between red and green in this picture.”
