The two paintings: copy of Kirchner “Street Scene Berlin 1913″ and ” Street Scene Sydney 2013″ were successful entries in a curated exhibition at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie in February – March 2014 called “Under the Influence”. Hastings Valley Fine Art Association had prepared a submission for this exhibition some two years earlier. Entries had to be two paintings, one a copy of a famous master painter (who had to have been dead 70 years to overcome copyright laws), and the second a work influenced by the copied painting.
German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner had been fascinated by Berlin night life, and had painted a number of Berlin Street scenes, which included street walkers, pimps and the general street movements. It is crowded, bright and vibrant. Street Scene Sydney represents street walkers at the Cross one hundred years later. The pimps, streetwalkers, vehicles and life on the streets crowd the scene, with similar colours used. Both paintings have been sold.
